John Coltrane, in memoriam

Is Marching In / Our Prayer".
"Apart from the fact that John Coltrane helped Ayler financially, the relationship between the two men was a very special one. They talked to each other constantly by telephone and telegram and Coltrane was heavily influenced by the younger man. One of his last wishes was that Ayler and Ornette Coleman, the other important influence on his later career, should play at his funeral."
"Very little could be said to further illuminate or magnify the stature of the music made at the funeral of John Coltrane. Trane had requested that Ayler's and Ornette Coleman's groups perform at the event. It's a toss-up which is more astonishing -that the natural state of Ayler's repertoire fit so perfectly into this profound circumstance, or that he was able to find a still higher plane of energy and expression for the funeral, even beyond the outpouring of feeling that Milford Graves points to at Newport. Ayler reaches beyond the saxophone even and uses his voice to conclude the performance."
